Causes of tooth discoloration

Why do teeth turn yellow? In fact, the color of teeth we see is not only the color of the tooth surface, but also the color of dentin through the enamel on the tooth surface. Young children's baby teeth are milky white. With age, the teeth will slowly turn yellow.

There are many reasons for tooth coloring and yellowing, which are generally divided into endogenous and exogenous:

Exogenous coloring is due to the existence of a variety of bacteria on the tooth surface, which secrete many viscous substances on the tooth surface. Tea scale and smoke stains in daily diet, as well as some minerals in drinking water and minerals in people's saliva are adsorbed on these viscous substances to form plaque and calculus, gradually turning the teeth yellow or black.

Endogenous coloring is formed during tooth development. If tetracycline is deposited in the dentin, the teeth will turn yellow, brown or dark gray, which is called tetracycline teeth; If the drinking water contains too much fluorine, it may also lead to dental fluorosis, with white chalk and Tan patches on the tooth surface; If the tooth nerve necrosis, hemoglobin and bacterial decomposition products can also make the teeth black.
