Many people have doubts about dental implants and worry about surgical pain. Here is basic knowledge about implant treatment.
General Procedure of Dental Implants
1. Implant treatment is a relatively long‑term process covering pre‑operative assessment, surgical placement, final restoration and aftercare. Good oral hygiene, avoidance of hard food and regular follow‑ups are essential for long‑term implant survival.
The full workflow: CBCT and oral examination are performed to evaluate alveolar bone. Under local anaesthesia, first‑stage surgery places the implant fixture into jawbone. For conventional submerged implants, 4‑6 months are required for osseointegration. Some patients need minor second‑stage surgery to attach healing abutments. After gingival shaping, impressions are taken for fabricating and fitting the final crown. Immediate implant placement is an option for eligible cases.

2. Implant surgery is carried out under local anaesthesia. Once anaesthesia works, patients will feel almost no pain during incision, flap elevation, bone preparation and fixture insertion.

3. If second‑stage surgery is required for gingival adjustment and healing abutment placement, it can also be completed under local anaesthesia with minimal discomfort. Impression‑taking and crown fitting in the restoration phase are generally pain‑free.
Note: The procedure itself is pain‑free. After anaesthesia wears off, soreness and mild facial swelling may occur in some patients and usually subside within 1‑3 days, which is a normal post‑operative reaction.
