1. Where do white stains on clear aligners come from
Studies show that protein deposits from saliva form on polyurethane aligner surfaces within one hour of wear. Bacterial colonization starts within 6‑12 hours.
Aligner replacement cycles vary individually: 7‑, 10‑ or 14‑day cycles as instructed by your dentist. With prolonged wear, micro‑scratches and cracks increase surface roughness, making bacteria stick more easily. The aligner gets dirtier and harder to clean over time.
Stains and debris tend to accumulate around attachments and indentations corresponding to crowded teeth. Apart from poor appearance, heavy bacterial load transferred back into the mouth raises risks of dental caries, periodontal issues and bad breath.
2. Effective cleaning methods for clear aligners
① Soft‑bristle brush under running water
Take off aligners before meals, rinse food debris away under running water and store them in the dedicated case.
Before wearing, scrub both inner and outer surfaces with a soft‑bristle toothbrush and cool running water for at least one minute.
⚠️Note: Do NOT use toothpaste for aligner cleaning. Abrasive particles in toothpaste will scratch the surface, making it more prone to staining. Do not brush aligners while they are in your mouth; the inner surface against teeth is where most debris builds up and cannot be cleaned this way.
Indentations for tooth cusps and attachments are hard‑to‑reach zones. Poor cleaning leads to reduced transparency and loss of elasticity of aligners.
② Ultrasonic cleaning
For stubborn dirt, use household low‑frequency ultrasonic cleaner for 3 minutes in cold water. Retainers require the same careful cleaning.
❗Never use heated water. High temperature accelerates material oxidation and may deform or harden aligners. Do not eat or drink hot food or beverages while wearing aligners.
③ Orthodontic effervescent cleaning tablets
Drop one orthodontic cleaning tablet into cold water and submerge the aligner (follow product instructions; typical soaking time ~15 minutes). Scrub hard‑to‑reach areas with soft brush in the solution. Rinse thoroughly under running water before insertion.
Effervescent tablets dissolve grease and deposits via bubbling reaction. Use them 1‑2 times per week; prolonged soaking will damage aligner material. Ultrasonic cleaner combined with cleaning tablets delivers better cleaning performance.
Important reminders: Never soak clear aligners in hot water, alcohol or disinfectant such as 84‑type bleach, which will cause deformation, cracking and material deterioration.
Note: Aligners should be removed for meals in most cases. Extra‑rigorous cleaning is required for rare cases where wearing during eating is authorized by your orthodontist.
